What Is Cryptocurrency SEO?

Generally speaking, SEO is the process of improving your website’s organic search rankings in popular search engines. But what does that have to do with cryptocurrency? Well, given the popularity of cryptocurrencies over the last few years, many people are now looking for information about cryptocurrencies AND searching for these terms online.

This means that if you’re able to rank for keywords such as “bitcoin”, “ethereum”, and “cryptocurrency” you’ll likely be able to tap into a large audience of people looking for information about your coin.

This makes SEO in the cryptocurrency niche very important, but it’s also quite challenging. This article will take you through the fundamentals of SEO and how it applies to cryptocurrency websites!

Do Crypto and Blockchain Projects Need SEO to Succeed?

The simple answer is YES. The more complex answer is, well it’s complicated. Everyone has their own opinion on this topic, but I’m going to give you mine.

I believe that for smaller projects (projects with less than 50 million USD market cap), SEO can make a significant difference in the success of the project…BUT…it’s not a guarantee.

The problem with SEO in recent years is that there’s been a ton of people jumping on the bandwagon and doing shady things to try and get their website to rank. This means that your website could end up competing against websites with thousands (or millions) of crappy backlinks which makes it very difficult if not impossible for you to rank above them.

The good news is that this also means that if you do your SEO right, rank high for a few months, and build up some authority and trust in the eyes of search engines (and website visitors), you’ll likely stay ranked high for years to come.

As Google cracks down more and more on shady SEO practices, it’s become more important than ever to do SEO the right way in order for it to have a positive impact on your website. This is especially true when it comes to attracting new users and potential investors who are looking for information about your cryptocurrency. But, even more so because when the day of reckoning comes for those shady sites, your site will be left unscathed and shining bright.

How Long Does It Take To Rank A Crypto Website?

This can vary dramatically depending on many factors. The main factor is the size and quality of your website in the “eyes” of search engines.

If you have a quality website with a unique design, good user experience, great content, and most importantly trust from visitors, then it’s possible to rank within weeks or even days depending on what you’re trying to rank for. However, if your website lacks those important things, it can take months or even years to rank well, if at all.

The other factor is how competitive the search terms are that you’re trying to target. For example, if you want to rank for “blockchain”, then all of the sudden your site must compete against a lot more websites compared to when you wanted to rank for “ethereum”.

This isn’t to say that your site won’t rank for more competitive terms, but it will be more difficult. In fact, if you do a good job with SEO on a website targeting a very competitive term, then you can easily outrank large websites and A-list crypto projects.

How Can I Get Started with SEO for Cryptocurrency Websites?

Actually getting started with SEO can be a challenge if you don’t know where to start. Don’t worry, I got your back! Here are some key steps that you need to follow in order to get the best chance of ranking high for your crypto website.

Best Practices For Cryptocurrency SEO

Now I’m going to give you some general SEO practices that everyone should do, but especially those looking to rank for specific keywords such as “bitcoin”, “ethereum”, and other similar cryptocurrencies.

Keyword Research

If you don’t know what words or phrases your audience is searching for then obviously it’s going to be pretty difficult to rank high for those terms. That’s why doing proper keyword research is such an important step.

The following is the exact process that I follow when researching keywords:

Brainstorm Keywords – Make a list of blockchain-related words and phrases that you think your target audience is most likely to search for. For example, “ethereum wallet” or “cryptocurrency exchange” or even just “ethereum”.

Analyze Keywords – Pay attention to the monthly search volume for each keyword. Be sure to check Google using this keyword planner tool if you are unable to find accurate numbers. For example, I might get 2-3 million searches per month for “ethereum wallet” while only around 100k-200k searches per month for “ethereum gas”.

Filter Out Keywords – Eliminate any keywords that have nothing to do with your project. There is no point in trying to rank for irrelevant keywords as Google will be able to tell if the information on the page is relevant to the keyword or you are just trying to stuff keywords (keyword stuffing is a practice that is banned by Google).

Aim for a Healthy Mix of High and Low Volume Keywords – Ranking for high volume keywords is the ultimate prize, obviously. However, high volume equals high competition. Don’t believe for a moment that low-volume keywords won’t help you build a strong SEO foundation. After all, they are still searched for every month.

Prioritize Keyword Phrases – Separate your list of high search volume keywords into word phrases with “-” between words. These phrases are more likely to be searched for than just single keywords, and you’ll get a bunch of low-volume terms that will help your website show up for related searches.

Create Content That Fits Keywords

This is one of the most important steps when it comes to ranking high for targeted keywords on search engines such as Google. The following are the steps I normally follow when creating content for websites:

Understand Your Audience – Ask yourself “who is my audience?” and “what do they want to know?”. Read comments on your social media pages, people usually aren’t shy about telling you exactly what it is that they need help with.

Think of Your High Traffic Keywords – Write down your most targeted keyword phrases and brainstorm content ideas that you can use to include those keywords. For example, if I’m writing an article about “ethereum wallets” then it would be a good idea to craft some unique content around phrases such as: how to set up an ethereum wallet, best ethereum wallets, and even ethereum web wallets.

Aim for 1-2% keyword density – I’ve read conflicting opinions on how much content you should have per keyword phrase so I’m going to suggest one thing: Aim for a healthy mix. One percent is the bare minimum and three percent isn’t uncommon if you are trying to rank quickly. Go above this and risk the possibility of being flagged as spam for keyword stuffing.

Create Content with Google’s E-A-T Principle in Mind – Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust. Google’s E-A-T principle. As you plan your content, keep these core principles of Google’s ranking algorithms in mind. Provide relevant, timely, authority-driven content that helps people answer questions.

Content Doesn’t Just Mean Text Blogs – Repurpose your content to various forms of media that are easily digestible by a wide range of audiences. This includes videos, infographics, and even social media posts.

Build Backlinks With Anchor Text Links – Getting backlinks from other websites is one of the best ways to get noticed by search engines such as Google. It is also one of the most difficult parts of SEO. To build organic backlinks for blockchain projects, I suggest building lots of great content and useful tools for users. Tools may include interactive elements such as calculators or quizzes.

Become a Thought Leader in Your Field – Another great way to build backlinks and off-site SEO for crypto projects is to become a thought leader in your industry. Write guest posts on popular crypto websites, share your ideas on forums and Reddit sub-forums, and even consider speaking at conferences.

Craft a Unique Business and Personal Brand – Nameless, faceless blockchain projects are the scourge of the industry. By crafting a thoughtful and unique personal and business brand, you will build trust in your project.

Build a Community Around Your Blockchain Project

Create Your Own Crypto Forum – Building a community is one of the best ways to attract people that are interested in what you’re doing. There are plenty of great website platforms for this like Bitcointalk and Reddit, but if you have the time and resources, create your own forum.

Make It Easy for People to Contact You – Building a strong community also means being extremely responsive to users. If people have questions or need help with something they will most likely reach out to you through social media or their email. Make it easy for them by having an email submission form on your website.

Focus On Growing Your Email List – An email list is one of the most powerful assets to any blockchain project or business because it’s extremely difficult for spammers to acquire high-quality mailing lists. Make sure you are focusing on building your list and collecting emails using lead magnets like eBooks, checklists, etc.

Common Cryptocurrency SEO Mistakes

Is Your Main Keyword Too Broad? – The more specific your keyword, the easier it will be to rank for that term. If you are targeting “cryptocurrency”, for example, then you’re going to have a tough time ranking for that keyword because there are millions of websites competing with you.

Do You Have Duplicate Content? – One of Google’s most important ranking factors is unique content so if you have copied or spun content on your website it will most likely hurt your rankings.

Watch for Keyword Cannibalization – Keyword cannibalization is when multiple pages on your website are targeting the same keyword. This is something to watch out for because it can easily lower your organic rankings for that term.

Is Your Meta Description Optimized? – The meta description is the short paragraph below each of your page listings in search results. It doesn’t impact rankings directly but it does affect click-through rates which have a direct impact on your rankings.

Is Your Title Tag Optimized? – This is another one of those ranking factors Google uses that doesn’t directly impact rankings but can have a huge impact on your click-through rates. Make sure your title tag is both descriptive and concise.

Does Your Site Load Fast? – Speed is a very important factor for SEO because people expect websites to load quickly, and if it takes forever for your website to load then chances are they will leave.

Include Keyword-Rich Internal Links – Building links within your own website helps Google understand the context and relevancy of a page, which can help with search engine optimization. Make sure you are linking to important pages within your site with relevant anchor text.

Error Pages Are A No-No – If you have a page that is bringing in zero traffic, then you should remove it from your website because Google can see this as an error and could potentially devalue the rest of your content. Don’t forget to 301 redirect any old pages to new ones that are bringing in traffic.

Build a UX-First Site Structure – Google has found that sites that have a user-friendly, easy-to-use layout are far more likely to rank high in SERPs. Focus on mobile speed as it is one of Google’s most important factors. Test each and every URL in your site using Google’s PageSpeed Insights Tool.

Incorrectly Structured Data – Make sure your site is up to snuff by testing it using tools like Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool. It will show you any errors or validation issues to help you fix them.

Don’t Dismiss Blogging – A blog is one of the best ways to get links back to your website, but if you are blogging make sure you are writing high-quality unique content that adds value. Don’t just fill up your blog with lots of useless short articles.
